Christian Clark holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance, and a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from Sam Houston State University in Texas. As a graduate teaching assistant, Christian served as associate musical director and conductor of the Sam Houston Opera, and as assistant conductor of the SHSU Concert Choir and Chorale. During his time at Sam Houston, he particularly enjoyed conducting the operas La Bohéme, La Traviata, and The Tales of Hoffmann. Christian has been honored to work with many treasured choral conductors, including primary teacher and mentor Allen Hightower, Paul Salamunovich, and Joseph Flummerfelt.
Before moving to Bend in 2011, Christian enjoyed a successful career in Houston, TX, as director of award winning junior high and high school choirs. During this time, he also performed as a soloist with the Cypress Creek Community Choir, Sam Houston State University Chorale and Symphonic Choir, Montgomery County Choral Society, and Houston Masterworks Chorus in works including Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Beethoven’s Mass in C and Choral Fantasy, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass and Mass in Time of War, Bach’s Cantata No. 140, Dubois’s The Seven Last Words of Christ and Mozart’s Requiem. Additionally, Christian performed internationally as a soloist singing works of Mozart and Mendelssohn, among others. Favorite operatic roles include Ferrando in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore, and Tamino in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. Christian also served for five years as music director at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Houston, and as assistant director of the Houston Masterworks Chorus, where he was privileged to prepare choirs for and perform with the Houston Ballet and Orchestra.
In addition to his work with Central Oregon Mastersingers, Christian co-founded and sings with the esteemed Bend Camerata chamber choir, serves as a member of the Sunriver Music Festival Board of Trustees, and has served on the faculty at Central Oregon Community College. When not directing or singing, Christian and his wife Audrey, a fabulous soprano, stay busy raising three young children.
