Through the Valley marks the debut of The Understory, the chamber ensemble of Central Oregon Mastersingers. Moving through music of struggle, hope, reflection, and connection, the program traces a journey from uncertainty toward light and toward one another. Works by composers including Amy Beach, Caroline Shaw, Carlos Cordero, Undine Smith Moore, Pavel Chesnokov, Orlande de Lassus, Reena Esmail, and Billy Joel reveal how voices across generations and traditions have given expression to some of our most enduring human experiences. From the radiant optimism of Light of a Clear Blue Morning to moments of prayer, longing, resilience, and quiet farewell, Through the Valley offers an intimate journey through music that asks us to listen closely—to the voices around us and to one another. The Understory is the chamber ensemble of Central Oregon Mastersingers, bringing together a select group of singers for intimate, expressive, and adventurous choral music-making.
Designed for a smaller ensemble and a more intensive rehearsal process, The Understory explores repertoire that rewards close listening, individual artistry, and a deep sense of connection between singers. Programs will range across centuries, cultures, and musical traditions, pairing established masterworks with compelling contemporary voices.
The name The Understory reflects the ensemble’s place within Central Oregon Mastersingers: rooted in the larger organization while creating space for new artistic growth. Through thoughtful programming and finely crafted performances, The Understory invites audiences to experience choral music up close—where individual voices are heard, harmonies take root, and music reveals something new.
