FAURÉ REQUIEM
With the Dove String Quartet and Stephen Marshall, organ Experience the Soulful Serenity of Fauré's Requiem! 🎶 Join us for an unforgettable musical event as we present Fauré's Requiem, a masterpiece of choral music that transcends time and touches the soul. Saturday, Oct 12 | 7PM Trinity Episcopal Church (St. Helens Hall) 469 NW Wall St Bend, OR 97703 Sunday, Oct 13 | 3PM Nativity Lutheran Church 60850 Brosterhous Rd Bend, OR 97702 Admission is free; donations appreciated. Fauré’s Requiem is a sublime and cherished masterpiece, offering more than enough reason to include it in any concert program. However, this November holds special significance, as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of Gabriel Fauré’s passing. In tribute, many choirs around the world have chosen to honor the composer by performing his most celebrated choral work. |
In addition to the Requiem, Mastersingers will perform two works by Lili Boulanger, a prodigious French composer, student of Gabriel Fauré, and the first female winner of the Prix de Rome composition prize. A remarkable talent from a young age, Boulanger was a multi-instrumentalist and trailblazing composer who shared her musical brilliance with the world until her untimely death in 1918 at just 24 years old. Though her life was short, Boulanger’s music displayed a unique voice that rivaled that of her contemporaries. Her style leaned toward Impressionism, featuring unexpected turns of phrases, stunning choral arrangements, and rich post-Romantic harmonies.
We're delighted to feature our collaborative pianist, Diane Thielen, who will join us for the exquisite and challenging Boulanger pieces that open the concert. The Requiem will follow, in a unique edition for string quintet and organ. Though we often hear the full orchestral version performed in concert halls, Fauré’s original scoring was intimate, and included organ, low strings, harp, and timpani. Our performance will be closer to this original version, and feature the Dove String Quartet with Stephen Marshall, organist. Samantha Winter, soprano, will delight as she sings the famous Pie Jesu, and Sterling Roberts will offer his rich baritone voice in the Hostias and Libera me solo passages.
This timeless Requiem not only showcases Fauré's gift for lyrical beauty, but also serves as a poignant reflection of his serene approach to life, death, and peace. It's a fitting tribute to a composer whose music continues to inspire. Whether you are a lifelong choral music fan or new to the genre, this promises to be an unforgettable experience. Please join us!
