Our program begins with the fabulous COS Wind Quintet performing Heinrich Kaspar Schmid’s Wind Quintet, Op. 28. Born in Germany in 1874, Schmid studied music with his father and sang in the boys choir at Regensburg Cathedral. After studying composition at the Munich Academy, he enjoyed a successful career as professor and composer. Though not particularly well-known, Schmid composed a number of lovely pieces following the Romantic tradition of the Bavarian School. He was particularly fond of Brahms, which is apropos given our recent performances of the Brahms Requiem and Liebeslieder Waltzes!
The performance continues with Antonín Dvořák’s Mass in D, an absolute gem of a choral work! Dvořák wrote the mass largely at his summer residence in Vysoka, surrounded by the natural scenery he loved so much and, despite the fact that he had been commissioned to write it, he worked above all for his own enjoyment. The mass is pure Dvorak: it clearly reflects the composer’s humble faith, his natural humility in the face of a higher Order, and his true joy of life. Originally composed for chorus and organ in 1887, Dvořák produced an orchestral version in 1892 which was published by Novello and became extremely popular (and positively reviewed) in England.
COM will perform yet another variation, transcribed by Joachim Linckelmann for chorus and wind quintet and part of German publisher Carus Verlag's "great choral works in small scorings" series. This arrangement offers access to a stunning piece of music that would prove difficult for COM to perform in either of the original settings.
Featured vocal soloists:
Andrea Hendrickson, soprano
Stefanie de Gruyter, alto
Tom Moore, tenor
Robert Guzzo, bass
Additional soloists: Robert Anderson, Sarah Flagg, Bruce Jessup, Dustin Jorgenson, Sue Peringer, Brandon Salas, Kathy Woodford
