ABOUT THE PROGRAM
When preparing for this concert (and our tour to Rome in June), it was clear that we needed to include music by Italian composer, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. Possibly the most important composer of the late Renaissance, Palestrina (1525 or 1526–1594) produced hundreds of sacred vocal works of serene beauty, and held positions at several churches in Rome, including St. Peter's Basilica. Along with Orlande de Lassus and Tomás Luis de Victoria, Palestrina greatly influenced the development of church and secular music in Europe. You'll hear from all 3 of these Renaissance Masters in our upcoming concerts! Palestrina's Missa Brevis, though not as well known as his Missa Papae Marcelli, is an absolute gem! Despite its title (which is Latin for "short mass"), this is one of Palestrina's most substantial and sonorous mass settings. First published in 1570, and an immediate success, the music has a strong character and beautifully illustrates the "Palestrina Style." Known for his clarity of line, lovely harmonies, and joyous rhythmic sense, Palestrina's Missa Brevis is complex and difficult to sing, yet serene, and a joy to listen to! While the program focuses on music from Italy, we wanted to showcase our talented musicians (both in Central Oregon and on tour in Italy) by offering selections from other genres as well. We are particularly excited to share R. Nathaniel Dett's lush setting of Ave Maria, Pilgrims' Hymn by Stephen Paulus, and Moses Hogan's exuberant Elijah Rock. We’re thrilled to offer these FREE concerts to our community, and hope to see you there!
